Descendants of Charles Muntz (est 1818 - 1862)

Photo

Some great, great grandchildren of Charles Muntz (est 1818 - 1862) gathered with spouses in 2007 at Torch Lake, Michigan. From left around the table are: Dave Muntz, Wayne Jensen, Pam (Kirkland) Jensen, Jean (Duer) Muntz, Noreen Lopez, me, Judy (McKeon) Muntz and Tom Muntz.

Charles Muntz was from Marlow, Mecklenberg, Germany, and appears to have immigrated to the U.S. with some family in late 1852 on a steamship from Hanover, Germany to New York. It appears they came through Ellis Island but then straight to Illinois, farming a short period in rural Cook County before settling about 1860 in Elgin. Charles had four children through a first wife, but it was with a second, whom we know only as Mary, that his fifth child - my great grandfather, Albert Charles "A.C." Muntz (1861 - 1932), was born. "A.C." and Mary Louise Henning married in 1881 and two years later he started Elgin Storage & Transfer Company. "A.C." and three generations of Muntz sons grew and operated the business successfully for over 115 years, before selling in 2000 to Allied Van Lines.

Andrew and Peter Muntz, the children of my cousins Tom and Judy Muntz above, each did family histories as high school assignments, in 1989 and 1992. These histories were extremely helpful, laying the groundwork for much that appears about the Muntz, Henning, Knott and Mahan families in this compilation.
