Descendants of George Younges (est 1790 - )

Photo

Smith Younges (1852 - 1920), above, a grandson of George Younges and son of Charles Younges, was my Grandma Kirkland's father - one of my paternal great grandfathers. He was a successful cattle rancher and farmer in Plato Township southwest of Elgin, IL - his eventual 700 acre spread coming to be known as "Youngdale" and having its own post office and train depot. A 1988 Kane County biography of Smith Younges's older brother, William, indicates the Younges were of German descent and that George was a leader in his community and distinguishing himself in the War of 1812. Several sources indicated Charles was a cattle rancher in Amsterdam, NY (Mohawk Valley, northwest of Albany) - probably George's community - before bringing his family west to IL about 1860. Smith and my great grandmother, Mary Caroline "Carrie" (Ferson) Younges, married in 1874.

Besides the Younges, my ancestors of the Kirkland-related Himes, Hewitt and Feeter families lived in the greater Albany-Mohawk Valley of NY before coming west. See the sections of this compilation of these three families for more details.
