Descendants of William Himes (est 1794 - 1849)

Photo

Mary Francis "Fanny" (Himes) Kirkland (1861 - 1947), above, Grandpa Kirkland's mother so one of my paternal great grandmothers, was a granddaughter of William and Nancy Ann (Feeter) Himes - my great x 3 grandparents. Their son, George H. "G.H." Himes, married Amanda "Minnie" Hewitt in 1858 in Elgin, IL, they giving birth to Fanny. In 1883, Fanny married my great grandfather, Alfred Edmund Kirkland (1858 - 1929), who had came from Canada to Elgin with his parents in 1866 and was a railroad conductor.

The Himes family was likely of German origin, Himes an Americanized spelling of German Heims (noted as alternative spelling in 1901 Feeter genealogy). A FamilySearch IGI record, various census records and a family letter noted in John Kirkland's 2007 genealogy indicate William Himes was born in 1794 (might be 1784) in Stone Arabia, NY (Mohawk Valley, northwest of Albany). He moved his family to Tonawanda, NY (near Buffalo), and then to southeastern MI (it appears Livingston County), before son George, maybe coming through Beloit, WI (see 1850 US census) settled in the 1850s in Elgin.

The Himes family was not the only Kirkland-related family to live in the greater Albany-Mohawk Valley region of eastern NY before migrating to Illinois. Hewitt, Feeter and Younges ancestors lived there too. See the separate sections of this compilation on these three families for more details.
